Retooling America for AI-Driven Supply Chains

I’m pleased to announce the publication of my latest book “Retooling America for AI-Driven Supply Chains” in collaboration with co-authors Justin Ren, Department Chair of Operations and Technology Management at Questrom School of Business, Boston University and Francois Charvet, Senior Transformation Director of Supply Chain Network Strategic Capabilities at PepsiCo.

Supply chains are undergoing one of their most critical transformation phases in history. The rise of automation, digital commerce and AI recently enhanced by its Gen AI subsegment are not only pushing for increased efficiency but also completely reshaping the way supply chains operate, innovate, and compete. The way companies are handling resources, moving goods and engaging with customers has already started shifting and those who don’t adapt might get left behind.

In Retooling America, we provide an actionable roadmap for professionals with real world examples to follow. Through various compelling case studies, they highlight the future issues and challenges supply chains will face, illustrating how AI and automation will redefine demand planning, inventory management, logistics, manufacturing, procurement, customer service and more. We also propose changes to the government, education, and corporate governance in response to the new reality.

Contributors June Youngs (former Vice President of Logistics, CVS Health), Bruce Welty (former CEO, Quiet Logistics), Cimarron Buser (Chief Marketing Officer, ViziApps), Mark Chockalingam (CEO, Valtitude), David A. Rocco (former Vice President of International Supply Chain Operations and Global Logistics, Staples), Frank Noppel (CEO, Blueflite), Chetan Agarwal (Chief Technology Officer, Bizlem Private Limited), Gopalakrishnan RK, (Vice President, Supply Chain Engineering, Wal-Mart), and Mahesh Sudhakaran, (former General Manager of Grid Software at GE Vernova and former General Manager Global Energy Environment and Utilities at IBM) helped to make the book relevant and specific to a wide range of industries and use cases.

Thank you also to Gautier Poittevin for penning an insightful Foreword that tees up the strategic context of AI in business from retail and services to manufacturing. Also deep appreciations go out to Li QUAN for her scrupulous attention to review, commentary and editing of the manuscript, and to Xinyang J. and Muhammad Taha Ali of Boston Strategies International for their support throughout the process.

Finally, thanks to my students at New York University and the University of Pennsylvania for integrating thoughts about AI and smart supply chain management into their group projects on publicly-traded companies, which stimulated many aspects of the debate, and to Zining Wang and Deepika Renganathan who provided extra support for my teaching while I dedicated time to this project.
